Supporting dignity through design: how uniforms can help aged care providers prepare for the Aged Care Act 2024

With the Aged Care Act 2024 now set to come into effect in November this year, providers across Australia must continue to prepare for a significant shift. At the heart of this new legislation is a clear focus on the rights, dignity and autonomy of older Australians. As aged care facilities transition to this new person-centred care model, every detail of the care environment is under the spotlight – including the uniforms worn by staff.

Uniforms are more than just garments. They shape first impressions, influence interactions and can either support or undermine the respectful, empowering environment the new Act calls for. At Uniformity, we believe purposeful design is essential to delivering exceptional care. Here’s how well-designed uniforms can help meet the expectations of the Aged Care Act 2024 and why now is the ideal time to elevate your uniform strategy.

1. Dignity and respect begins with appearance

The new rights-based framework introduced by the Act calls for care environments to uphold dignity, privacy and identity. Uniforms should reflect this commitment. That means professional, well-fitting attire that communicates competence without being clinical or cold.

Colour-coded roles, discreet branding and smart tailoring help residents easily identify staff while maintaining an approachable feel. Gone are the days of one-size-fits-all uniforms – aged care organisations should consider designs that support individual expression while still meeting workplace needs.

2. Comfort and practicality fosters a more responsive care environment

Comfortable staff are better equipped to provide compassionate care. With person-centred care at the core of the new legislation, uniforms must allow workers to move freely, perform manual tasks safely and stay comfortable through long shifts.

Modern designs should therefore prioritise:

• Flexible cuts and soft-touch fabrics for unrestricted movement
• Breathable materials to support staff in physically demanding roles
• Functional features like pockets and adjustable waistbands

When staff feel physically at ease, they can better focus on what matters most – providing quality, attentive care.

3. Clear identification and safety is critical for enhanced accountability

The strengthened regulatory framework introduced by the Act includes enhanced accountability and clearer expectations for staff conduct and their safety. Uniforms play an essential role in ensuring staff can be easily identified by residents, visitors and regulatory bodies alike.

Design features to consider include:

• Visible name tags and role-based colour distinctions to reduce confusion
• High-visibility or safety additions (where required)
• Standardised dress codes that align with organisational policy and support a consistent, professional image

Uniforms should provide clarity, reduce ambiguity and reflect each aged care facility’s commitment to quality care and transparency.

4. Sustainability and cultural sensitivity matter more than ever

While not explicitly stated in the legislation, the broader reforms support sustainability and inclusion – values many aged care providers are adopting as part of their transition plans.

This is an opportunity for all these organisations to:

• Choose ethically sourced garments made through responsible supply chains
• Offer culturally appropriate uniform options (e.g. modest cuts, inclusive sizing, neutral tones)
• Select longer-lasting designs that reduce waste and better withstand laundering

By aligning uniform choices with these values, aged care providers can demonstrate leadership and meet growing expectations from residents, families and staff alike.

Looking ahead

The Aged Care Act 2024 represents a powerful shift towards respect, autonomy and transparency. Uniforms, though often overlooked, are a visible and impactful part of how that shift is realised on the ground.

As aged care providers begin updating their policies, practices and care models to reflect the new legislation, now is the time to consider whether your uniforms are aligned with what’s next.
