Jersey Day – Starting Conversations about Organ Donation

Organ donation saves lives, restores health and improves the quality of life of recipients. Once a year, Australians get together to raise awareness and start conversations with work colleagues, friends, and loved ones about the importance of becoming an organ and tissue donor. This is Jersey Day.
Jersey Day began in 2015, inspired by the gift of life that Nathan Gremmo gave to six people when he became an organ donor at age 13. Since then, Jersey Day has spread nationally to schools and workplaces. Each Jersey Day, thousands of Australians don their favourite sport jersey to school or work to raise awareness and inspire others to consider the importance of organ donation.
Uniformity is a proud supporter of Jersey Day, and, organ and tissue donation. That’s why we want to help break down a couple of myths about donation.
“It’s better to let my family decide.”
Fact: If you want to become an organ donor, you should tell your family. 8 out of 10 families say yes to donation if their family member had registered to be a donor. However, when a family is uncertain about their family members’ choice, only 4 out 10 families agree to donation.
“I’m too old to become an organ donor.”
Fact: Age isn’t a barrier – people over 80 have become organ and tissue donors. If you die in a way that gives you the opportunity to be considered for donation, a medical team will assess whether you can become a donor, and if so, they will talk with your family.
One organ donor can save the lives of up to seven people, and help many more through eye and tissue donation. While the majority of Australians support organ and tissue donation, only around one in three (36%) are registered to be a donor.
